Daily Grill

Category: American (Traditional)

1 star rating
 08/09/2008
I've never thought highly of this place - overpriced, mediocre food, bad service has always made this a last resort for me unless going with a group. This past week, Daily Grill was the consensus for a going away lunch, and it's the final straw for me.

11:45: "Hi, can I make a reservation for 5 at lunch today?"
Rudely,  "You don't need a reservation. Just come in"
"Really? You don't have a wait?"
           "no" click.
12:00: "Hi, table for 5 please"
"Please wait over there - it will be about 5 minutes"

Strike 1 - Rude host who lies.

12:15: We order our meals: 4 iced teas, 3 bowls of Gazpacho, 1 bowl chowder, some salads, sandwiches, and other entree courses. At least the drinks came out quickly.

12:30: "What in the hell is taking so long? Didn't we order cold soup?" Jokes about the soup being under the "cold lamp," and the gazpacho actually just being hot pasta sauce that they are chilling in the freezer ensue.

Strike 2 - inexplicably long wait times for cold soup.

12:35: Soups arrive - hooray, SOUP! We ask for some bread. That makes its way to our table 5 minutes later.

12:50: Done with soups, see our waitress and ask about the status of our order for the first time - "it'll be out in a little bit." She doesn't even swing by the kitchen to check the status.

1:00: "Hey we all have meetings we need to get to, can you tell us how
          much longer?"
"Yes - the food will be out shortly - i'm going to check on it now"
She doesn't.

1:15: "This is getting ridiculous - Mr. Manager, we've been here an hour already and still don't have our main courses - at this point we don't have time to stay"
"But sir, I just checked on your order and it was just put in at 12:58 - I'm sure it will be here shortly"

Strike 3 - Inattentive waitress who clearly didn't know what she was doing and failed to put our entrees in despite us reminding her twice that we were in a hurry + restaurant manager who doesn't take a "customer is always right" attitude.

We got up from the table, said that the service was horrendous, and walked out.

I have been a waiter, I know what it's like to be "in the weeds," and I would be sympathetic if she hadn't repeatedly told us it was on its way.

The ONLY thing this place has going for it is the decor - it's a nice restaurant. That and the fact that they gave a bunch of free meal tickets when one of us wrote them to talk about how terrible our experience was.

Everything else about the place sucks so stay away from it at all costs - they don't value or deserve your business.

Banana Leaves Asian Restaurant & Sushi Bar

Category: Asian Fusion

2 star rating
 Update - 08/03/2008
Once my go-to Thai place for Sunday dinner delivery, Banana Leaves has fallen from grace in my books. One thing that has always been problematic with this place is that you're waiting at least an hour for your food when you deliver, sometimes longer, which is ridiculous. Although the food quality is generally pretty good, I always find peanuts in my papaya salad despite clearly articulating I can't eat nuts due to an allergy - I wonder if the chef's put 1 peanut in there, just to keep me on my toes.

I really wanted to continue with banana leaves because they have friendly staff, and the food is okay, but lengthy waits and inconsistency have lost my business.

This is one of those places i'd give a 3.5 if I had the choice, but because I find the proprietors to be rather pleasant, I'll round up instead of down. As of late, Banana Leaves has become my go-to order-in Asian cuisine because they have convenient online ordering, a wide variety of cuisines, which normally turns me off but in this case they pull it off relatively well so I'm cool with it, and because the food does taste just a bit better than other Chinese places.

I generally always start off with a Tropical Salad, and a heads up: it comes with peanuts, so specify if you do not want any. The salad itself consists of papaya, mango, and cucumber all julienned. The dressing is zesty, fruity, and refreshing. I generally ask them to spice it with chili Sometimes I'll order either the egg drop soup or the hot and sour, both of which are tasty. I ordered Tom Yum once, but it wasn't all that great so I don't order it. *One thing to note is that because delivery times take so long, soup is sometimes luke warm by the time it gets to you, which isn't ideal.

For my main meal, I'll generally go with either the Mee Goreng or the General Tso's, which is some of the best I've had in DC. The Mee Goreng can be a bit oily, more so than I'd like, but it's still pretty good and definitely hearty. The Tso's chicken has a bit of a sweet and sour tang to it, and the chicken is nice and tender, and cut into smaller chunks so that you're not trying to gnaw away at huge chunks of meat with your teeth.

I'm definitely able to relate to the folks who express frustration with the wait times for delivery, and the varying quality of the food, but on a whole, it's significantly better quality than your average Chinese delivery place, and they offer Thai cuisine, which is a bonus. Aside from MeiWah, this is my favorite place to order from - i've never eaten there in person.

Georgia Brown's Restaurant

Note to indecisive people: you will have a hard time choosing what to eat here because literally EVERYTHING on the menu looks and sounds amazing.

For starters, let's start with the starters. Fried Green Tomatoes, Catfish Fries, Deviled Eggs....all of it sounds amazing. I had the Fried Green Tomatoes and they were tasty, but a tad light on the salt- was hoping for more flavor in that app. The Ma's Brown's Appetizer Sampler sounds amazing and looks big enough to eat as a whole meal - i'm inclined to try it next time.

Entrees - salivating at the thought of it. I ate the ribs, which any BBQ connoisseur knows is a very tough thing to prepare properly, and Georgia Brown's knows how to do it! $23 buys you a full rack of deliciously spicy ribs that are tender and crispy on the outside. The meat falls off the bone and the BBQ sauce is amazing. Also delicious looking/sounding is their southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens, the sweet and spicy pork loin, the salmon or coconut curry rockfish, the flank steak, the chicken....all of it is just amazing.

Go here. Time and time again. you will never be disappointed with anything except the slow service (which is VERY slow. I'd imagine it's even more slow than in the actual South!)

Didn't have dessert, but it looked amazing. Definitely one of my new favorite restaurants in this city.

I've passed by this place a number of times, but never thought about stopping in. This one evening I was in Arlington passing some time and I noticed that the UFC fights were on here, so I popped in for a quick bite and to catch a few fights. Doesn't take long to realize that this place is a big sports bar - tons of tv's everywhere, lots of beer, and a decent looking menu. I had a hickory chicken sandwich and Carlsberg lager, which isn't easy to find on tap - another indication that it's a big soccer bar. I'd say this place is great for an afternoon to just lay low, watch some sports, grab a bite, and have a brew or few. I wouldn't suggest it for anything other than that.

Pasara Thai Restaurant

Working in Dupont, I've got a bunch of thai options: Mai Thai, Nooshi, ThaiPhoon, and Raku. I've been there, done that with all of them and was therefore excited to learn that a thai place was taking the place of that crappy electronics store that used to waste the space next to Lucky Bar.

Some co-workers and I finally went there today. I was surprised by the size of the place - it's enormous, and it's very well appointed; they've certainly done a great job with the decor. We were seated upstairs, and we quickly realized that the wait staff likes to give you PLENTY of time to review the menu. I'd say we were sitting for a good 12 minutes before someone came to our table to take our orders. The person who did was clearly new to it, but did a fine job.

Once we ordered, the food came out pretty quickly. I was disappointed with the portion sizes here. Their lunch portions pretty much start at $9.95, and you get a few pieces of whatever meat you order and some veggies and rice. It's really not filling or satisfying, and you end up kind of looking at it when they put it in front of you like, "where's the rest of it?!" or look incredulously at the waiter, thinking he ate half your lunch before dropping it in front of you.

The flavors were good, but they seem to make their basil crispy, which is bizarre to me - certainly takes away from the flavor of basil that is otherwise so good. Their spice rack is identical to the one they bring to the tables at Mai Thai, but they give you less, which is probably better for my abdomen, but i don't like someone limiting how much spice i can put on my meal.

All in all, I'd say that this place needs some time to grow into it's newness and I"ll go back a few times, but they haven't turned me into a convert from MaiThai or Nooshi. Get a little more generous with their portions and then I'll give it another college try.

Bobby Van's

Category: Steakhouses

3 star rating

This place is mediocre at best. The service is hit or miss (usually miss), their dirty martini sucks and doesn't contain olive juice (if a steak house can't make a dirty martini, that's a bad sign), their iceburg wedge salad, which is served in the form of a chopped salad, is not tossed and does not contain enough dressing, and while the tomatoes are tasty, the rest of the salad is subpar (if a steak house can't make a good iceberg + bleu cheese salad, that's a bad sign). I've had their "signature steak" which is a cajun ribeye, and I was not impressed. It was extremely greasy - I don't mean fatty, ribeye's are supposed to be fatty, this thing was sitting in a pile of grease and it was gross. The flavor was far too charred/burnt, making it less savory and more charcoal-like.

On the positive side, this evening I had a cheeseburger that was massive and relatively decent. Their steak sauce is very sweet and tangy, which I don't find enjoyable - if i wanted to dip my steak in something sweet, i'd use maple syrup. That said, if the steak was any good to begin with, I wouldn't need to dip it in anything, right?

If you're going to drop $60-$75 on a meal, go to Morton's, Ruth's, BLT, or better yet, Fogo de Chao. Bobby Van's is a glorified Clyde's, and we all know how much that place sucks food-wise.

Boston Marriott Copley Place

Great location. Great service. Clean + and apparently recently renovated rooms and corridors. Multitude of restaurants within the hotel + a walk-out into the chic shopping at Copley Place and the more reasonable Prudential Center malls. Pool + health spa. And quite possibly THE most comfortable hotel bed that I have ever slept on - not a joke, I want to find out what it is and buy one for myself - it's one of those you sink into but it's still supportive, which is just what I needed. Also, it's a huge tower so some great views of the city and smack dab in the middle of everything you could ask for.

All in all, you can expect quality and consistency from Marriott - in fact, i'd say they are synonymous. Hit www.priceline.com and try getting a room here for $150, it usually takes, but with fees and taxes it comes to about $180, and you can get a room from the site directly for $200, so might be worth going to that.

Highly recommended.

Chop't Creative Salad Company

Categories: Food, Restaurants
Neighborhood: Dupont Circle

4 star rating
 Update - 07/06/2008
I'm still a fan of this place, hell I eat here 3 times/week at least, and they have done away with the rock-hard roles that made better paperweights or door stops than they did some floury goodness with my salad, but they have "replaced" them with two triangles of wheat tortilla strips that they use to create their salad wraps. This puzzles me. You do away with crappy bread rolls and replace them with flimsy pieces of a tortilla wrap? This being said, it's not going to deter me from getting my Chop't on a few times/week, and after a recent trip to Cosi where it took me 10 minutes to order a salad (I was 3rd in line when I arrived and they had 1 person working the salad station at 2 pm), they aren't losing me to Cosi either - oven-baked flatbread or not, that place sucks ass.

But please Chop't Management, get us SOMETHING we can sink our teeth into!!!!

So let me get this straight: you take a bunch of veggies, and maybe some cheese and chicken, throw it in a bowl, toss it up, and charge me $10 for it.....seriously?

The answer is yes, seriously, and people gladly open the wallets and line up out the door at this creative salad company that is likely to put a real dent in the business of nearby Cosi, which I have all but boycotted based on inattentive staff and lackluster product quality. Chop't is cool, hip, new, and fresh. Will I continue to frequent the place months from now? Time will tell. Would I pay $10 for a sub? No. But for a healthy salad that fills me up? Sure....What a business concept...Today I was in there and I just said to my buddy, "I wish I owned this place."

First off, are there kinks that need to be worked out? Sure - but what start-up organization doesn't have that. C'mon people...perfection from day 1 is a lot to ask. This company brilliantly had "live training" where they gave away free salads from 11am-2pm on opening day. And yes, I was waiting in line for 45 minutes to see what the fuss was about. Upon later thought, the opportunity cost of standing in line for that long to save $10 actually put me in the hole a few times that, but whatever!

Walk into Chop't, get greeted by their friendly management staff who directly into the assembly line where your creative salad is put together. There are a wide variety of ingredients for your choosing, but you can also order their specialty salads (The Cobb is what i get on the regular). They have something like 20 dressings, many of which are low-fat "Spa" choices that taste great.

Now, one thing that cannot go without mention is that the bread rolls that come with their salads are currently awful. A little anecdote though, that is what kept me coming back: I get this rock roll from them, and while eating someone in my office says "i won't go to chop't because Cosi's bread is just so much better, and they are cheaper!" I decided, "why not let this new business know about this," so I sent a comment to them. Within hours I received calls from both the VP of Operations up in NY, and the GM of the Chop't location asking for my insight and letting me know that they are working on getting better bread and will do so by month's end. I'm holding them to it, but the VP of Ops used to work at Cosi, so he knows what he's up against...hopefully they'll get something tasty in their ASAP, but regardless of that, what customer service!!!

Regardless of this, Chop't seems to be doing business as rock solid as their bread rolls, with people lined up constantly to get their fill. And because the salads are chop't you get that much more...I'd highly recommend. Will it be perfect every time? No. But you're eating a salad for chrissakes...get the nutrients in and get on with your day....

Our "Tour de Bars" in Boston this past weekend included an afternoon stop at The Tap in Faneuil, Dinner in the North End, then Daisy's, Lir, and Whiskey's. I'd say that I like this place better than both Daisy's and Whiskey's because it was bigger, more open, and just had a more lounge-like feel (we were upstairs), rather than the whole college bar mess you find at the other bars. The bartender was attractive but not particularly nice - in fact, she was seemingly annoyed when I ordered 8 drinks from her.

"Oh....my....God....how can this guy order THAT many drinks from me? I mean really. Do I look like some kind of bar tender or something? And 8 drinks for only $80?! That's peanuts - it's not like i'm going to get a good tip out of this"

Really? C'mon darlin' - if you don't want to served drinks, shake your booty on the dance floor or get a job where you can look at a computer all day or something, instead of making me feel like i'm a pain in YOUR ass (which was very nice, btw - at least you have that going for you).

I like the big wooden winding stair case. I like the couches. I don't like the carpeting on the upstairs floor because it's all sticky, likely from tons of liquor being spilled on it. The drinks are not mixed very well and were in general pretty weak. Oh, and add to that the fact that they close at 1am on a Saturday???? Leaves me thinking "why bother?" I'm changing my review to 2 stars now....to reflect my "why bother" attitude.

Whiskey's Food & Spirits

I generally don't like bars with red hue lighting because it makes me feel like i'm entering hell. Often times, I've found that bars that have red lights DO in fact make me wonder if I entered hell. But i'm willing to give it a shot.

Enter Whiskey's and you notice a few things: 1) The red "hell-like" lighting; 2) It's about 120 degrees; 3) there are 500 people crammed around a square bar interior, while booths around the outside of the square bar, I suppose where people eat during daytime, are empty. Well the inner square of Whiskey's is hellish. We opted to sit in the outer square though, where the waitress reminded us we'd need to pay through her. I had no problem with that - let her deal with the sweaty, immovable crowd.

All in all I could see how this might be a good place to get the night started, but unless you like being in moshpits at metal concerts, don't bother with Whiskey's past 11:30 or 12pm, and certainly not after 1 when all the bars who close at 1 let out and everyone runs like mad to get another hour of drinking in at Whiskey's. Quite frankly, they should have a "day-name" of "whiskey's" and then pitch themselves as a hotspot at night. They should name that hotspot "sardine's".
